The competition kicked off with tight competition in the swim. The fastest out of the water were Mikel Ugarte, Michael Kalb and Milan Brons, with the Basque athlete leaving the water only a second ahead. The gap was somewhat wider among the female triathletes, as Anne Haug left the water almost five minutes ahead of her nearest rivals, Fiona Moriarty and Lydia Dant.

There was fierce competition on the bike course. Participants traversed the island’s stunning landscapes, such as La Geria and Mirador del Río, before returning to Puerto del Carmen. Danish athlete Matthew Palmer was the first into transition after 180 kilometres of cycling, when he picked up the pace ahead of Norway´ s Jon Breivold and Mikel Ugarte. In the women’s competition, Anne Haug reinforced her superiority leaving British Lydia Dant, her main rival, more than 18 minutes behind at the run transition.

At this point, only 42.2 kilometres stood between the triathletes and the finish line. The podium was looking like a Spanish affair. After consistently staying with the lead pack throughout, conquered a well-deserved third place some four minutes behind compatriot Jordi Montraveta, who showed impressive rhythm during this last part of the race finishing in second place. Belgium´s Vandendriessche snatched the win by overtaking his rivals with fifteen minutes to go for the finish line. In the women’s category, Anne Haug crossed the finish line first, with Jeanne Collonge and British Lydia Dant rounding out the podium at this 2024 Club La Santa IRONMAN.
